Welcome to the Colorado River GIS Network

Making Change, Providing Knowledge.

This is the home page of the Colorado River GIS Network. This site was created as a resource page for archiving and listing collections of resources and informational pages that would help those around the world understand the issue of the colorado river. You can also make this a one-stop destination for general information about the Colorado, but be sure to check other sources when creating academic research.

What's so important about the Colorado River?

The Colorado River is a large body of water that has many tributaries throughout what are known as the Basin States: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wymoning. The Colorado starts from melting snow in the Rocky Mountains, and ends in the Pacific ocean in Baja California, Mexico. But the problem is, the river is drying up. The headwaters are not actually reaching the Pacific, and the surrounding area in Baja California has become a desert. That's not the only problem the river faces. The river is overallocated among 40 million people, and is failing to support that many people due to bad water management. The river also faces contamination issues from industrial use. In the end, changes need to be made, and fast.

But many various organizations, researchers, and policymakers are advocating for the Colorado's survival. People are coming together with all kinds of solutions that can help change things for the better, and ensure a sustainable future along the hardest working river in the West. The Colorado River GIS Network strongly encourages you to gather as much information as you can about the river through our website, and see how you can help.
